Language practice by speaking

Have a real conversation in the language you are learning. An AI partner replies at your level, helps when you get stuck, and lets you tap any word for its meaning.

Practice mode is built for the part of language learning most apps never reach: actually speaking. You talk out loud in the language you are learning and an AI conversation partner answers at a level just above yours, so every reply is understandable but still teaches you something. Make a mistake and the answer naturally echoes the correct form, the way a patient friend would, with no red marks and no buzzer. Translations stay out of the way until you want them: tap any word or sentence to see what it means, with romanization such as pinyin when the script is new to you, and hear it pronounced on demand. It works for more than 100 languages, including many that no course or app teaches, in any browser.

When to use it

Common situations where this mode is the right pick.

  • Building speaking confidence

You understand far more than you can say. Regular low-pressure conversation closes that gap faster than any vocabulary drill.

  • Learning a language no app teaches

Heritage languages, regional languages, less common ones. If the mainstream apps skip your language, chances are you can practice it here.

  • Preparing for a trip or a move

Rehearse the conversations you will actually have: ordering food, small talk with neighbours, asking for help. Arrive already used to speaking.

  • Reviving a rusty language

Studied it years ago, understand it fine, freeze when you have to speak. A few conversations a week bring it back.

  • Talking with family in their language

Practice before the call with your grandparents or your partner's parents, so the real conversation flows.

  • Breaking through the intermediate plateau

The partner adapts as you improve and stays a step ahead of you, so the conversation keeps stretching your range.

How it works

  1. 1

Pick the language you are learning

Choose from more than 100 languages, and set your own language so translations appear in it when you ask for them.

  2. 2

    Start talking

Introduce yourself, describe your day, bring up any topic. Speak from the first minute; the partner meets you at your level and keeps the conversation going.

  3. 3

Tap what you do not understand

Any word or sentence shows its translation, with romanization for non-Latin scripts, and can be read aloud. Then jump back into the conversation.

Frequently asked

How is this different from Duolingo or other language apps?
Those apps teach through exercises, taps and streaks. This is the other half: an open conversation where you produce the language yourself. There are no lessons, levels or scripts, just talking, which is exactly the skill most learners say they are missing.
What if I make mistakes?
You will, and that is fine. The partner understands imperfect speech and weaves the correct form naturally into its reply, the way a friendly native speaker would. You pick up the correction without being interrupted or graded.
I am a complete beginner. Is it too early to start?
You only need a handful of words, even just greetings and a few set phrases. The partner keeps its replies short and simple at first and grows with you. Anything you do not understand is one tap away from a translation.
Does it work for languages with a different script?
Yes. For languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi or Thai, tapped words and sentences also show romanization, for example pinyin for Mandarin, so you can connect sound and text from day one.
Do I need to install an app?
No. Practice mode runs in any modern browser on your phone, tablet or laptop. Sign up, allow the microphone and start speaking.
